Recapture of the Regions North and South of the Yellow River

Tis said the Northern Gate is recaptured of late;

When the new reach my ears, my gown is wet with tears.

Staring at my wife’s face, of grief I find no trace;

Rolling up my verse books, my joy like madness looks.

Though I am white-haired, still I’d sing an drink my fill.

With verdure spring’s aglow, “its time we homeward go.

We shall sail all the way through Three Gorges in a day.

Going down to Xiangyang, we’ll come up to Luoyang.

On Yueyang Tower

Long have I heard of Dongting Lake,

Now I ascend the Yueyang Height.

Here eastern state and southern break;

Here sun and moon float day and night.

No word from friends or kinsfolk dear,

A boat bears my declining years.

War’s raging on the northern frontier,

Leaning on rails, I shed sad tears.

On Yueyang Tower

translated by Rewi Alley

For long I have heard of

This Dongting Lake, but

This the first time I

Climb the Yueyang Tower;

Seeing how southeast

The lands of Chu break from those

Of Wu, with our night and day;

Neither home folk nor friends

Have sent me any message; sick

And old I can travel but by boat;

Over far mountains, away

To the north, still there is war

And I lean over the railings,

Full of sadness.

On Yueyang Tower

I had always heard of Lake Dongting

And now at last I have climbed to this tower.

With Wu country to the east of me and Chu to the south,

I can see heaven and earth endlessly floating.

...But no word has reached me from kin or friends.

I am old and sick and alone with my boat.

North of this wall there are wars and mountains

And here by the rail how can I help crying?
