最后一片树叶的美国诗歌
I saw him once. --
As he walked through the door;
A stone on the road now
Then came the sound of footsteps one one

Hobble along.

(黄呆忻译) 霍姆斯的诗风格清新,轻松自然,具有出色的技巧、机智的话语,充分显示出诗人的聪明智慧。爱默生认为他的诗“机智、精彩、十分得体”。1836年,他的第一部诗集出版,其中的抒情诗《最后一片树叶》( The Last Leaf)以美国浪漫主义文学的代表作家赫尔曼·麦尔维尔的祖父托马斯,麦尔维尔少校为主人公,用轻松、逗乐的口吻,亲切而又揶揄的笔调表现旧时代人物,体现出一定的历史反思,风格生动鲜明。
诗歌的第一小节中,诗人寥寥数语,一个步履蹒跚的寂寞老人出现在读者眼前。第二小节回忆起他快乐、风光的过去,“据说在他年轻时一/那时岁月的刀子/没把他修剪——/宣读员跑遍这城/比他再愉快的人/一个没发现”。第三至第六小节里,我们看到这个曾经相貌堂堂、脸色红润得“像雪地里”“一朵红玫瑰”的年轻人,也终究逃脱不了自然的规律,变得老态龙钟:干瘦的鼻子像短棍耷拉在下巴上头,弯着腰,弓着背,脸色憔悴好友都已不在。他美丽的爱人也早已离他而去,如今只剩下一块冰冷的石碑陪伴着这个曾经被幸福和宠爱包围着的老人。诗人把这个风烛残年的老人比作残冬里的最后一片叶子。曾经是一棵那么挺拔、枝繁叶茂的大树,凛冽的秋风扫过,树叶逐渐凋零,直到剩下最后一片枯黄的叶子,在瑟瑟的风中颤动,即将随风远去……最后两节里诗人理智地反思——要是我此生绵绵,成了最后的叶瓣,到了春天时,人们也会像我这样,笑看着我依依难舍“老迈的空枝”。
然而,霍姆斯对待诗歌创作的态度并不虔诚,所以即使他最优秀的诗作也是睿智有余而想象力不足,在情感的深度与视野的广度上都有所欠缺。虽然他创作了大量的诗歌,但大多是应景之作,平铺直叙。虽然他是自己那个时代的伟人,却没能以更有分量的杰作在文学史上占得更醒目的地位。
